Why is it important that businesses step up?

New Zealand has put a lot of policy in place over the past thirty years to support business competitiveness around New Zealand, but it has come with some social consequences. These policies have brought benefit for the country in being a great place to do business - but sadly, some of our social and environmental statistics have also become embarrassingly bad in the process. It’s time for businesses to step up and play their part in crafting a more inclusive and sustainable New Zealand for the future.

An inclusive society for business competitiveness and reduced inequalities.

Evidence shows that economic growth is not sufficient to reduce poverty if it is not inclusive and if it does not involve the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.

Businesses for responsible consumption and production.

To reduce future economic, environmental and social costs, strengthen economic competitiveness and reduce poverty, businesses must make changes.

A more sustainable and inclusive future.

To encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships with communities, we have to know what ‘effective’ looks like.
