New Year, New Business Model
We’re used to starting a new year with resolutions – read more books, drink less wine, work out more often. And we’re used to giving up on most of these resolutions just a few weeks in to the new year as well.
But why not make 2019 different? Why not make 2019 the year that you resolve to make a change for the better, and commit to that change?
In 2019, Step Changers is challenging you to commit to Corporate Social Responsibility. We’re not asking you to dramatically change the way that you do business – you don’t have to become a not-for-profit, stock nothing but vegan organic hemp products, or volunteer your entire staff to plant community gardens for a solid month. But you do need to make a change, no matter how small.
Make 2019 the year that you reflect on how your business fits into the community. Make 2019 the year that you think how you can give back to that community. Make 2019 the year that your employees go home proud, that your community sees the value that you bring, and that you make more than just a profit out of your business – you make a change.
At Step Changers we believe that every business, big or small, has the power to make a change for the better. Whether you’re established in your community or just starting out, with a budget of millions or just a couple of employees, great Corporate Social Responsibility can be a healthy, sustainable part of your business model. How do you get started? It can be as easy as 1, 2, 3:
Choose your one cause. Be it saving cats in Nepal or funding a school with the likes of Cambodia Charitable Trust, a clear, visible purpose will help pull everything into place.
Workshop ways your business can do better with your team. Schedule that late January planning meeting at a cafe nearby, and get a list together of the 10 actions you’ll commit to to get started.
Document yourself! What’s not reported on isn’t managed. One of the most important pieces for great CSR is transparent reporting, so make sure to write down what actions you’re taking, the impact, and the issues that might arise. In a year’s time, it will be time to put this into a flash report for your website and stakeholders.
This isn’t just up to business owners. Ask yourself what makes you go home proud. Ask your manager how you’re giving back to your community. Ask other businesses in your community about the good works that they do, and show them you value them for it.
Let’s make 2019 the year we make a real change – for ourselves, for our businesses, and for our communities.
After all, it’s still probably an easier commitment than going to the gym more often.
